YACHT

Portland, OR

RIYL: Le Tigre, LCD Soundsystem, Sleigh Bells, The Rapture, Hot Chip, New Order, Gang of Four and Talking Heads

"Following the artistic breakthrough of 2009's See Mystery Lights, Yacht's second album (Shangri-La)... continues to mine a fruitful blend of new wave, dance-punk, and playful electro-pop, this time with a slightly tighter, poppier focus." 4 stars - All Music Guide

"Ironic jape or not, Shangri-La captures the DFA label aesthetic perfectly, blending electro post-punk, disco and art-pop with conceptual elan, and icing the cake with dance-friendly production." 4 stars - Uncut

"There's a strong air of the post-punk '80s, and at the same time, the album's driving rhythms make it more DFA-like in spirit, like they're taking up part of the mantle of the now-defunct LCD Soundsystem, perhaps." - Pop Matters

"Even in the context of what is turning out to be a stonking year for electro-pop, YACHT have concocted a record to match their peers in Metronomy, Cut Copy and Friendly Fires." 8/10 - Drowned In Sound

"With Shangri-La, YACHT takes us away from this crumbling, radiation-leaking, bomb-launching reality on a fuck-all magical mystery tour of chimerical musical landscapes laden with beguiling beats and sparkling synthesizers that leave us dancing in the face of doom. " 4/5- Consequence Of Sound

"YACHT... (is) The most exciting avant-garde outfit to flourish since The Knife." - NME

"If dance is the religion YACHT's preaching this summer, consider us converted." - Boston Globe

“YACHT... precisely programmed digital ear candy” - Rolling Stone

Yard Dogs Road Show

San Francisco, CA

"The Yard Dogs Show, a traveling medley of burlesque and vaudeville acts and sideshow oddities..." - Las Vegas Weekly

"His real name is Zebu Recchia, and at the age of nineteen, he left his hog-riding, bricklaying father in Denver behind to become a tramp. Though it's hardly your usual 21st-century occupation, it seemed like the timing was just right for Zebu, whose stage name is Eddy Joe Cotton, a moniker he chose arbitrarily when he first hit the road... The Yard Dogs, he says, embody tramp values in their art. "First you've got to define 'tramp artist': That's someone who uses any resources at hand to create his or her art, despite financial inadequacies. I've tried to create a mobile gallery of this type of artist." And despite difficulties in rounding up a bunch of drifters on a regular basis, Cotton's persistence has resulted in gigs with the late Ken Kesey and his resurrected Merry Pranksters, at the Coachella and Burning Man festivals." - Westward Magazine

"How do you describe the Yard Dogs? Part Cabaret, part jug band, part lounge act, part vaudeville --all played out on the set of Junkyard Wars." - Go Go Magazine

Year Long Disaster

Los Angeles, CA

Featuring the son of Kinks legend Ray Davies and a former member of Third Eye Blind, Year Long Disaster is getting a lot of attention - and a recent signing to the Volcom label. If you are fans of Clutch, Zeppelin and early ZZ Top, you should definately check out this band!

"Year Long Disaster featuring Daniel Davies, the son of the Kinks guitarist Dave Davies. Their self-title EP sounds like a dream mash-up of Led Zeppelin and jeff Buckley, and sports some of the best hooks I've heard in months." - Guitar World

"Year Long Disaster... echoes the hard-driving rock music of the late 1960s and 1970s a la Led Zepellin, Cream and Free." - Pittsburgh Tribune

"Year Long Disaster... sound(s) more like Thin Lizzy or Clutch than the Kinks. The music is reminiscent of swaggering, Motor City rock 'n' roll." - Charleston Gazette

"Year Long Disaster... will have fans of Blue Cheer and early ZZ Top foaming at the mouth." - Guitar Player

Yelawolf

Gadsden, AL

RIYL: OutKast, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes and Eminem

"He’s snide, he’s scrappy, he’s on the Shady imprint... but by exploiting the differences between the two, Yelawolf's debut album, Radioactive, does an excellent job of separating the artist from his label boss, Eminem." 4/5 - All Music Guide

"Much has been made of Yelawolf's Southern rock fandom, but Radioactive is more an ode to the Southern hip-hop movement that started to seep across the world a decade ago." - Spin

"Radioactive (is) simultaneously the most and least mainstream friendly album of the year. It's a seeming contradiction that only someone who was supremely confident in their identity as an artist could pull off." 4/5 - DJ Booth

"Radioactive... is a standout effort that introduces the full-range of (Yelawolf's) talents as an MC with crafty songwriting abilities and deft ear for a sonic palette." 4/5 - XXL

"Radioactive may veer towards the mainstream Pop, but nothing changes the fact that in an era of neon-Rap, Yelawolf is the bug light." - HipHopDX

"When he's in his element – ruling over frenetic beats with rhymes that cut right to the bone – it's clear that Yelawolf's star is sure to shine for the foreseeable future." - BBC

"Yelawolf's got personality to spare... (and) unceasing technical skill." - Paste

Yellow Ostrich

New York, NY

RIYL: Cults, Real Estate, Dirty Projectors, Of Montreal and Neutral Milk Hotel

"Yellow Ostrich diverges from their last album... (they) went from a solo act with a backup band into a full-fledged ensemble and it’s frickin’ phenomenal... Strange Land is worth the price of admission... a solid sophomore effort." - Indie and Such

"Yellow Ostrich... NYC bedroom chamber-popper tears down wall for a wild rumpus of loops, horns, percolating percussion. 7/10 - Spin

"Alex Schaaf’s musical project Yellow Ostrich breaks out gorgeous harmonies and clean instrumentals... the catchy rhythms make this a solid album for spring. - Filter

"Strange Land is a bold and successful leap into new and previously unexplored territory for Yellow Ostrich." - All Music Guide

Yip Deceiver's music is an exciting take on experimental dance pop with strong hooks, and playful elements of new wave, 80s R&B and electro. Both members pull double duty in of Montreal's live band, and Dobbratz also plays with the disco-pop act Sugar & Gold.

"This Of Montreal-spawned side project... produces experimental pop with charming New Wave overtones and retrofied R&B dance music bounce." - Creative Loafing

RIYL: The Waterboys, The Pogues, The Tragically Hip and The Frames

The Young Dubliners consider themselves to be ambassadors of Celtic and American rock. The band members' dual Irish and American heritage has always resulted in a distinctive and richly varied musical palette.

Yes, it really is that good." - NME

A truly excellent release." 8/10 - Pop Matters
